The Nile River is the main river that runs Egypt, Uganda and Sudan. The second largest river in the world with 6650 km in length, is born in Lake Victoria in Uganda (the second largest lake of freshwater in the world and the largest Africa), and flows in the form of delta on the Mediterranean Sea where deposits 2,700 cubic meters of water per second.

Called "Iteru" or "great river" by the ancient Egyptians who owe him the development of their civilization, the Nile is currently a source of energy through hydroelectric plant of Aswan (or Aswan).

It is divided into two parts in Egypt that are extremely fertile due to the presence of organic kill periodically deposited by river floods: a region known as the "Nile Valley", consisting of about 15 km on both sides throughout the its extension into Egyptian territory, and the "Nile Delta" region where it flows into the sea and where it divides into several effluents and the two main ones are the Rosetta and Damietta, with a total length of 9,600 km² of fertile area.
The basin of the Nile is very extensive occupies a 3,349,000 sq km area. In its path it receives various names, when leaving Lake Victoria is called the Victoria Nile and then to go through Lake Albert is called Nile Alberto until you reach a region in Sudan where it receives the name of Al-Jabal ( the mountainous).

In Sudan, it crosses a marsh known as the "Sudd" and to reach the Malakal region it receives the name White Nile to reach Khartoum where it meets the Blue Nile, a tributary coming from Ethiopia. Later, still in Khartoum, the Nile (also called white), receives its last great tributary, the Atbara River Abyssinian plateau.

The main tributary of Lake Victoria is the Kagera River, which rises in Burundi, so also it is said that the most remote tributary of the Nile is the Kagera.

In glazed divisions, make the most of natural light to avoid having to resort to both the artificial lighting: not only is free as more environmentally friendly (no pollution);

Use light colors on the inside of your home to the natural and artificial light to be reflected more easily;

Do not leave the lights when not needed;

Install presence detectors which turn the lights so the rooms are unoccupied;

Do not use lamps with excessive power. Select appropriate lighting needs of the site and type of the intended use;

In buying a lamp, it is important to choose one that does not have many obstacles to the passage of light, as they require the use of higher wattage bulbs, increasing energy consumption;

Handle the lamps whenever the bush, because when you touch the bulb (or tubes) ends up no longer waste with heat darken, causing it to lose some light emission;

Keep the bulbs and globes or protectors and clean lamps so that the energy spent is utilized in full. Clean bulbs use less energy;

If you think the light is low and needs to be replaced, first try cleaning. The powder that accumulates on the lamps reduces the light that they emit, giving the idea that they are no longer functioning properly.

Use tubular fluorescent lamps which necessites light for many hours, such as in the kitchen.

Before selecting a compact fluorescent lamp or LED, make sure this is the right to replace the existing lighting.

When this occurs the sun seems to disappear (eclipse, comes from the Greek ékleipsis = disappearance) totally or partially.
In astronomy, an eclipse occurs whenever celestial bodies are aligned so that the sight of one of them is destroyed because of this alignment.
Of course the moon is much smaller than the sun, which would prevent it from cover it. It turns out that, as the distance of the moon and the earth to the sun is very large what we see is only an illusion that they are both the same size. So much so that when the moon is at the farthest point of its orbit (which is an ellipse) it does not even cover the sun completely, is called annular eclipse.
There are three types of eclipse: total eclipse, when the sun is completely covered by the moon; the partial eclipse, when only part of the sun is hidden by the moon; and the annular eclipse, when the moon is far from the earth in its orbit and can cover only the center of the solar disk.

Importantly, an eclipse only occurs when the moon is new or full moon in the moon phase.

If an eclipse on the full moon phase, will be a lunar eclipse, because the earth is between the moon and the sun. And, if an eclipse when the moon is in the new moon phase, will be a solar eclipse, because the moon is between the earth and the sun.
As the Earth orbital plane around the sun (the ecliptic) does not coincide with the moon's orbit around the earth plane, we see the eclipse only when the moon passes through the so-called "line of nodes", a line of intersection between the orbital plane of the moon and the plane of Earth's orbit.
If it were not such that tilt of the Earth's orbit with respect to the moon's orbit, we would see an eclipse every full or new moon phase. Would be two eclipses per month!
The lunar eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon that occurs every time the Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, exactly in the line of intersection of its orbit to the Moon, the "line of nodes", and when the moon is in full phase or the new phase.

When this occurs, Moon enters in the area called the "umbra" (or shadow), or "penumbra" of the Earth and is fully or partially concealed for a few minutes.

To better understand: Imagine you took a ball and lit a lantern in her direction. The shadow that will form behind the ball will have a clearer part and another darker. The darkest part has the shape of a cone with the base of the ball and the lighter portion has the shape of a drum, also with the base (lowest) in the ball, round cone.

The cylinder, or the clearest region, is called the "penumbra" of partial shade space that gets a little light, and the darkest part, the cone is called the "umbra", part that receives no light, completely dark.

With any spherical body in the solar system is the same effect, and the lunar eclipse too.
It is as if the lantern were the sun, the ball was the Earth and the Moon was in the cone region, or "umbra". Why we can not see it during the eclipse.

It turns out that the moon, according to the inclination of its orbit, can pass only near the region "umbra", causing a partial eclipse, or even an eclipse "penumbral" when it only crosses the penumbra region. The latter can not be seen with the naked eye because the moon remains virtually the same brightness.

The main difference of the lunar eclipse and solar eclipse, which can be perceived by us, is that the lunar eclipse can be seen from anywhere in the earth's hemisphere that is facing the moon. Have a solar eclipse can only be seen the so-called " eclipse of the way ", that is the way that the" umbra "of the moon (the tip of the cone) travels through the earth's surface when the moon is between the Sun and the Earth.

Another difference is that the solar eclipses usually only last for about 7 minutes, while the lunar eclipse can last up to a little over 3 hours, while the total phase lasts about 1 hour.

Earthquake or earthquake tremors are sudden and passengers that take place on the Earth's surface caused by underground shocks of rocky plates of the Earth's crust to 300 m below ground. Other reasons are considered gas offsets (mainly methane) and volcanic activity. There are two types of earthquakes: The naturally occurring and induced.

The majority of earthquakes are of natural origin Earth, called tectonic earthquakes. The strength of tectonic plates slide on the atmosphere may move away, collide or slide into one another. With these forces the rocks will changing to its yield point, after which the rocks begin to break down and release accumulated energy during the elastic process. The energy is released through seismic waves on the surface and inside the Earth.

It is estimated that more than 10% of the energy is reproduced by an earthquake seismic waves. There are also induced earthquakes, which are compatible to human action. Originate from explosions, extraction of minerals, water or fossil, or even by falling buildings; but have much lower magnitudes of tectonic earthquakes.

The consequences of an earthquake are:

• Soil Vibration,

• Fault Opening

• Landslide,

• Tsunamis,

• Changes in the Earth's rotation.

In addition to harmful effects to man as injury, death, financial and social damage, buildings collapse etc. The most regions subject to earthquakes are regions near the tectonic plates as the western South America where is located the Nazca plate and the South American plate; and regions which form new plates as in the Pacific Ocean where is the Ring of Fire. The length of a failure caused by an earthquake can vary inches million kilometers, for example, the San Andreas fault in California, USA.

In the US alone there are about 13,000 earthquakes a year ranging from about 18 major earthquakes and a giant earthquake and the others are mild or even unnoticed.

The scale more used to measure the magnitude of earthquakes is the seismologist Charles Francis Richter. Its scale ranges from 0 to 9 degrees and calculates the energy released by earthquakes. Another commonly used scale is the Mercalli-Sieberg, which measures the extent of the damage by earthquakes. This range is divided into 12 categories according to their intensity.

Introduction:

The metal is one of the most widely used products in the tasks of day-to-day. We found metal packaging, wire and other metal products in various products. To be ruled by people and businesses can go through a recycling process that guarantees its reuse in the production of recycled metal reciclado.O metal has almost all the features of the base metal. It can be recycled many times without losing its characteristics and quality. Aluminium, for example, can be used without limitation. The steel after being recycled back into the production chain to be made into cans and auto parts, for example.

Importance:

The metal recycling is extremely important for the environment. When we recycle the metal or buy recycled metal are contributing to the environment, as this material can no longer go to landfill or nature (rivers, lakes, soil, forests).

Separation in the recycling process:

In the first phase of the metal recycling process, they are separated by types and characteristics. Thus, aluminum, copper, iron and steel are recycled by different processes.

Types of recyclable metals
- Aluminum cans (soda, beer, ..) and steel (sardine cans, sauces, oil, ...);
- Wires, nails, screws;
- Pasta tubes;
- Wireless Pots;
- Wires;
- Metal plates;
- Aluminum objects (windows, doors, gates, ...);
- Wire and copper objects;
Introduction:

Plastic is one of the most widely used products in today's society. To be ruled by people and businesses can go through a recycling process that guarantees its reuse in the production of recycled plastic reciclado.O plastic has almost all the features of regular plastic.

Importance:

The plastics recycling is extremely important for the environment. When we recycle plastic or buy recycled plastic are contributing to the environment, as this material can no longer go to landfill or for nature, polluting rivers, lakes, soil and forests.

Recycling of PET packaging:
In recent decades the industries, especially food and beverage, are replacing glass bottles and cans for PET plastic. Because they are more resistant and economic, PET is already present in the packaging of juice, water, oils and soft drinks.
When it began to be used, the PET was not recycled and caused environmental pollution. Currently, PET recycling is practiced on a large scale by recycling companies.
The PET recycling process goes through the following steps: 1) The PET bottles are washed and undergo a pressing process; 2) PET bales are crushed, causing the flakes; 3) The flakes undergo an extrusion process, causing the grains; 4) The grains are processed polyester yarn or other plastic products.

Types of recyclable plastics:

- Plastic bottles;
- Plastic Containers many;
- Covers;
- Plastic bags;
- Pipes;
- Bumpers cars;
- Disposable cups;
- Toys parts;
- Packaging of cleaning and hygiene products.

Introduction:

The paper is one of the most used products everyday tasks (day-to-day). When not being used, can pass through a recycling process which guarantees its reuse in the production of recycled paper. Recycled paper has virtually all the features of plain paper, but its color may vary according to the used paper recycling process.

Importance:

The recycling of paper is of paramount importance for the environment. As we know, the paper pulp is produced by certain types of trees.When recycled paper or buy recycled paper we are contributing to the environment, for several if not thousands of trees left to be cut.

Types of recyclable paper:

Types of paper that can be recycled: paper, cardboard, product packaging, wrapping paper, notebook paper, ...

How to make recycled paper at home (home recycling):

1 - Separate the paper that will not need, cut into small pieces and place in a container with water. Leave on for the full day.
2 - Take this wet paper and beat for example with a magic wand or stir well to dissolve and turn a kind of mass.
3 - Put that spread mass (in fine form) in a kind of fine mesh and cover with a weight that will have the press function.
4 - After 24 hours, remove the weight and let the paper dry, preferably in a dry environment or in the sun.

Introduction:

Glass is one of the most widely used products in the tasks of day-to-day. To be thrown in the trash by people and businesses can go through a recycling process that guarantees its reuse in the production of recycled glass. The recycled glass has virtually all the features of ordinary glass. It can be recycled many times without losing its characteristics and quality.

Importance:

Glass recycling is extremely important for the environment. When we recycle glass or buy recycled glass are contributing to the environment, as this material can no longer go to landfill or nature (rivers, lakes, soil, forests).

Separation in the recycling process:

One of the first steps in the glass recycling process is detached by colors (amber, green, translucent and blue) and types (straight, wavy, glass windows, cups, ...).
This separation is extremely important for the manufacture of new glass objects, it ensures its characteristics and qualities.

Types of recyclable glass:

- Bottles juices, soft drinks, beer and other beverages;
- Medicine bottles;
- Perfume bottles;
- Glass flat and smooth;
- Window glazing;
- Plates, bowls and glasses (provided they are not of acrylic, ceramic or porcelain).

Curiosity:

- The main raw materials used in the production of all types of glass is silica (silicon dioxide).

The Sun and the planets

The Sun is about a thousand times larger than all the planets together. Its gravity force attracts the planets, causing them to turn around in elliptical orbits. The nine planets are divided into two groups: four small, rocky, near the Sun, and four large and gaseous, further apart. Pluto is a puzzle because it does not fit into any of the groups and there is no consensus in the scientific community regarding its nature.

Mercury - is the fastest planet of the Solar System and is also what is closest to the Sun Do not have atmosphere and its surface is very similar to the Moon..

Venus - a planet that is often mistaken for a star, because then the moon is the brightest object in the night. The large carbon dioxide concentration in its atmosphere results in the greenhouse effect responsible for the high surface temperatures of the planet.

Earth - also called blue planet, owes its brilliantly colored to large bodies of water that cover most of its surface. We can only see a third of its solid surface; the rest is covered by seas, oceans and large bodies of ice of the poles, the ice caps. It is the third planet orbiting the Sun, after Mercury and Venus. Has a natural satellite, the Moon.

Among the planets of the solar system, the Earth has unique conditions: it has large amounts of water, tectonic plates and has a strong magnetic field. It is believed that the Earth is the only planetary body that has life, at least in the form as we know it. As for how the Earth is a sphere, slightly flattened at the poles.

Mars - has a very characteristic reddish color and is the planet where there is the largest volcano in the solar system - Olympus Mons.

Jupiter - is the largest planet in the solar system and has a set of 52 natural satellites. The characteristic red spot as seen on its surface has a diameter three times larger than the earth.

Saturn - this planet is known for its ring system, which has a dazzling shine and extending for a distance almost as great as that which separates the Earth's Moon.

Uranus - is the only planet that rotates "lying" around the sun.

Neptune - the great dark spot that is seen on the surface of this planet is a huge storm system, where the winds blow to the high speed of 200 km / h.

Pluto - this celestial body arouses some controversy as to its nature: is the smallest planet in the Solar System or the largest of the "objects" of the Kuiper belt?
The processes involved in the extraction of energy resources are quite varied and may refer to:
- Oil - extracted from the basement of our planet through perforations;
- The sun - captured with the help of instruments such as furnaces, collectors or photovoltaic panels;
- Biological resources - obtained from living beings such as in forestry.

> Exploration of non-energy natural resources
The processes involved in the extraction of non-energy resources are also varied, for example:
- Water - extracted from large natural deposits, such as surface water and groundwater;
- Iron and other minerals - extracted in mines;
- Marble and other mineral resources - extracted in open quarries.

> Transformation of natural resources
The processes required for the processing of natural resources, so that they can be used by man varies depending on the natural resource considered.
> In the case of the sun, it can be used for:
- Heating through solar ovens or solar collectors;
- Energy production through photovoltaic panels.

> In the case of oil, this must be refined in order to separate the various products produced from it, such as gasoline, tar and plastic.
> Biomass, such as wood, may be used, according to the cutting and processing, to build objects or for energy production.
> The water collected after the nature must undergo various treatments to become potable.
> Iron is a mineral resource. Its use implies purify it in order to obtain pure iron. Subsequently the material is melted and molded according to desired.
> The ornamental stones such as limestone are cut and carved according to their use.
> Environmental impacts of extraction and processing of natural resources
The extraction and processing of natural resources incur environmental impacts.

> The use of wood leads to logging, which can have impacts as:
- Deforestation;
- Destruction of natural areas;
- Biodiversity loss;
- Soil erosion.

> The use of the heavy oil also has impacts on the environment such as:
- Destruction of natural areas;
- Contamination of water;
- Soil contamination;
- High energy consumption.

> The exploitation of mineral resources such as iron can have the following impacts:
- Destruction of natural areas;
- Contamination of soil and water.

> The exploitation of ornamental stones such as limestone can lead to the following impacts:
- Destruction of natural areas;
- High noise pollution.

> Measures to sustainability in Portugal
Natural resources are essential for the development of our civilization. It is important to implement measures to prevent its depletion.
Examples of these measures implemented in Portugal are:

> National Energy Strategy 2020 (ENE 2020), whose objectives are:
- Reduce the energy dependence of the country;
- Encourage the use of renewable energy;
- Reduce emissions of greenhouse gas effect.

> Rural Development Programme, which aims to increase the efficient use of water in agriculture.

> Strategic Plan for Municipal Solid Waste (PERSU), which aims to encourage selective collection, management, processing, recycling and recovery of municipal solid waste.

REDUCE

The first rule to consider is the reduction of the amount of waste produced. Consumers should adopt green behavior, acquiring resistant materials, having a higher lifetime, rejecting all that is to use once. They prefer, for example, cloth towels and napkins instead of paper, to avoid purchasing aluminum and plastic rolls, avoiding the use of tableware or plastic containers taper so as to achieve a significant reduction of waste volumes and choose the packages for which there is a package tour of recycling. Companies, in turn, should produce less waste, making smaller packages with lower costs of energy and natural resources.

REUSE

Reuse means to use more than once a particular product. We all more or less consciously ever had behaviors environmentally friendly, particularly in the different use we give to certain materials.
With a little imagination and creativity can reuse materials, giving them another feature. A simple candy tin can be used to put pens, sewing material or for decoration.
Empty bottles of glass or plastic can be used to store other beverages, packaging can be exploited for other purposes, appliances, furniture, toys can be donated to people in need or sold as used objects and magazines, newspapers and books can be delivered in schools, institutions, libraries, community centers and hospitals.

RECYCLE

Recycling is a process of transforming waste into new products or raw materials.
Materials such as paper, plastic, metal, rubber, glass and wood, which no longer meet the needs of its possessor should be selectively separated and placed in the appropriate collection point.
These materials thus enter the recycle loop, giving rise to new objects that would otherwise be discarded as waste.

1 - Evaporation
The water of the oceans, seas, rivers, streams and lakes by action of the sun evaporates (changes from a liquid to a gas) and water vapor formed by the action of gravity rises into the atmosphere.

2 - Evapotranspiration
Animals and plants, a process known as evaporation, also emit water vapor to the atmosphere.

3 - Condensation
In the atmosphere, the water vapor cools. This process is referred to as condensation, i.e., the steam turns into water droplets, forming clouds.

4 - Rainfall
When the clouds pass through cold areas condensation increases causing precipitation. This can be in the form of rain, snow, sleet or fog.

5 - Infiltration
When precipitation occurs, some of the water from rain (or snow, hail, fog) falls directly on the oceans, rivers, streams and lakes, and other surface flows yet another infiltrates into the ground. Some of the water evaporates evil falls on the ground, especially in closed or sealed heated areas such as paved roads, parking lots and roofs of buildings.

Water that infiltrates the soil, some is absorbed by plant roots, other supplies the headwaters of rivers and underground reservoirs (aquifers).

Sun

Through the action of solar energy, the great engine of the continuous circuit of water, and respiration and transpiration of living beings, the water returns again to the atmosphere.
So the cycle repeats itself over and over incessantly ...

As the name implies, the Protocol was signed in Kyoto (Japan) in 1997.
The document establishes the industrialized countries to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2, carbon dioxide) and other greenhouse gases (so you know what is the greenhouse effect clicks over "greenhouse effect"), ie, protocol imposes a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Only the rich nations are required to reduce their emissions, other (developing) as Brazil, China and India, although they are major polluters, can participate in the agreement, but are not obligated to anything.
That does not mean they should not care; the contrary, the whole world has a responsibility to fight global warming, but the idea is that the countries that launched gases in the atmosphere have increased obligation to reduce emissions.
Those who achieve a satisfactory result, will receive the so-called "carbon credits" that are worth money.
The Brazil although it has many duties in the agreement, only wins with this protocol because any project developed here in order to reduce the greenhouse can turn into carbon credit. If by chance some rich country can not or have difficulty reaching the target, he can buy that credit from Brazil.
The alcohol from cane sugar pollutes less than fossil fuels (gasoline, diesel) and is a substitute fuel from oil;
The document includes the participation of hundreds of countries; But unfortunately, the success of the agreement is not complete, because the United States (largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere) refuses to sign the document as well as some other countries, such as Australia.
President George W. Bush claims that there is insufficient evidence linking global warming to industrial pollution and furthermore, he says that his country's economy would be harmed, since they are dependent on fossil fuels.

Instead of reducing emissions, the United States chose to develop cleaner technologies.
Global Warming and the Kyoto Protocol are two things that go together, it is impossible to talk about one without mentioning the other.
The Protocol was created precisely to prevent heating and grow increasingly harms the planet and its inhabitants.

Chronology

In 1988 in Toronto (Canada), was the 1st meeting between government officials and scientists about climate change. This meeting described the sad impact that such changes cause to our planet. Two years later, the IPCC reports and warns about the importance of reducing the emission of the main greenhouse gas (CO2 - Carbon Dioxide). In 1995, the IPCC again is a warning to scientists communicating that the first signs of climate change are already evident. In 1997, it signed the Kyoto Protocol and on April 29, 1998, Brazil signed the document.
Global warming is increasing the average temperature of Earth, causing changes in the climate of some regions, intensifying natural phenomena such as hurricanes and droughts, among others. Some scientists blame mankind for this temperature rise.
Lately, the global warming became a topic in various media, the public is worried about what will happen to our planet.
As the name implies, global warming is the rise in global temperatures, generating serious complications such as hurricanes, droughts, floods, extinction of thousands of animal and plant, melting poles and other problems that man is unable to cope or control.
Many years ago, man destroys the planet and the researchers warn about the serious consequences of these acts.
There is ample evidence that the planet's temperature has increased: thermometers rose 0.6 ° C since the mid-nineteenth century, sea levels also rose and glacial regions of the planet are shrinking. Scientists also consider evidence of global warming, the temperature difference between the land surface and the troposphere (nearest atmospheric soil zone).

Most climate scientists believe that increasing the amount of greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide, methane, etc) into the atmosphere causes a rise in temperature, greenhouse gas emissions (resulting from deforestation and burning of fossil fuels) can become a barrier that the heat spreads increasing the earth's temperature. (see Greenhouse Effect).
The most responsible for greenhouse gas emissions are the United States (which topped the list with about 36% of the world total), the European Union, China, Russia, Japan and India.
The IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) created by the UN, has gained prominence because of its expected reports on the causes of this immense problem and also for pointing out some ways to reverse the situation.
In 2005, entered into force the Kyoto Protocolode that includes the participation of hundreds of nations that have pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere; however, the United States has not signed the agreement.
Climate scientists warn that the consequences of global warming will have immense dimensions, most of them predicts a shortage of drinking water, changes in the conditions of food production and increase in the number of deaths caused by various disasters (floods, heat, drought, etc.) besides the rising sea level and the extinction of various animal and plant species.

Probably the most affected will be those nations that do not have many conditions to combat this problem, because they have no financial, technological and scientific resources.
The greenhouse effect is not only harmful! Without it, life as we know it could not exist. Serves to keep the planet warm, and thus ensure the maintenance of life.The greenhouse effect is a process that occurs when a portion of the solar radiation reflected by the Earth's surface is absorbed by certain gases in the atmosphere. As a result, the heat is retained and is not released into the space.
What can become a disaster is the occurrence of a greenhouse effect that destabilize the planet's energy balance and gives rise to a phenomenon known as global warming. The animal habitat is constantly changed due to this problem.
Greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O)) absorb some infrared radiation emitted by the radiating surface of the earth and on its ever absorbed energy back to the surface.

As a result, the surface receives almost twice as much energy from the atmosphere than it receives from the Sun and the surface is about 30 ° C warmer than it would be without the presence of gases "greenhouse".

The pollution of the last two hundred years has the thickest layer of existing gases in the atmosphere. This layer prevents the dispersion of light energy from the sun that illuminates and warms the Earth and also retains the infrared radiation (heat) emitted by the surface of the planet.
Earth Hour is a WWF initiative that began in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour in a stand against climate change.
A year later Earth Hour has become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people in 135 countries to show their support to this cause to symbolically turn off their lights.

Global landmarks such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge, CN Tower in Toronto; the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco; the Colosseum of Rome, among many others, went dark as symbols of hope for a cause that became more urgent every time and in any part of the world.
