What is the Kyoto Protocol?

As the name implies, the Protocol was signed in Kyoto (Japan) in 1997.
The document establishes the industrialized countries to reduce emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2, carbon dioxide) and other greenhouse gases (so you know what is the greenhouse effect clicks over "greenhouse effect"), ie, protocol imposes a target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Only the rich nations are required to reduce their emissions, other (developing) as Brazil, China and India, although they are major polluters, can participate in the agreement, but are not obligated to anything.
That does not mean they should not care; the contrary, the whole world has a responsibility to fight global warming, but the idea is that the countries that launched gases in the atmosphere have increased obligation to reduce emissions.
Those who achieve a satisfactory result, will receive the so-called "carbon credits" that are worth money.
The Brazil although it has many duties in the agreement, only wins with this protocol because any project developed here in order to reduce the greenhouse can turn into carbon credit. If by chance some rich country can not or have difficulty reaching the target, he can buy that credit from Brazil.
The alcohol from cane sugar pollutes less than fossil fuels (gasoline, diesel) and is a substitute fuel from oil;
The document includes the participation of hundreds of countries; But unfortunately, the success of the agreement is not complete, because the United States (largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere) refuses to sign the document as well as some other countries, such as Australia.
President George W. Bush claims that there is insufficient evidence linking global warming to industrial pollution and furthermore, he says that his country's economy would be harmed, since they are dependent on fossil fuels.

Instead of reducing emissions, the United States chose to develop cleaner technologies.
Global Warming and the Kyoto Protocol are two things that go together, it is impossible to talk about one without mentioning the other.
The Protocol was created precisely to prevent heating and grow increasingly harms the planet and its inhabitants.

Chronology

In 1988 in Toronto (Canada), was the 1st meeting between government officials and scientists about climate change. This meeting described the sad impact that such changes cause to our planet. Two years later, the IPCC reports and warns about the importance of reducing the emission of the main greenhouse gas (CO2 - Carbon Dioxide). In 1995, the IPCC again is a warning to scientists communicating that the first signs of climate change are already evident. In 1997, it signed the Kyoto Protocol and on April 29, 1998, Brazil signed the document.
